CANON PERSONALITY:
"Happiness is neither something you can force people to be, nor something to be bestowed upon. The only thing we can do is to assist people into becoming happy of their own accord."
Hedonistic to a fault, Wataru is a man that acts as glib and shallow as they come—but it's only a mask, something he admits to having to Yuzuru (who he feels wears one as well), upon many other masks he wears, as someone willing to fulfill any and every role passed onto him... though it's not to say he isn't the type of person to just pass off menial tasks and not pay attention to the details if they don't interest him, because he is. That mask is just an exaggeration of that quality.
Beneath it, he's fairly sensitive to other people and their moods, able to read them—though whether or not he decides to respond appropriately depends entirely on how serious he considers the situation. He's hardly ever so straightforward, though he has his moments, particularly when it comes to criticism: he won't skimp on it, and he's an incredibly strict teacher as a result. If there's potential, he wants to shine it; he won't let it rot.
Being a genius, hard work is something that he admires and finds intrinsically interesting and special—so he likes to teach, especially, those with the willingness to work, who won't simply just learn something quickly. This is what makes his attitude towards Tomoya and Tori so different than his towards Natsume, who styles himself as Wataru's apprentice. Even Hokuto is treated differently, being the son of two incredible entertainers but being without any of their talent at all, and a dense determination that manages to be irritating to Wataru as a second year.
Natsume, however, would just pick up on anything Wataru tried to teach him instantly—and it isn't even acting or anything that he'd want, it would be magic tricks. Revealing the truth of magic too often causes it to become less believable and fantastical; he loves Natsume, as he loves the rest of the Oddballs, but it isn't as if he's taught him anything. He states as such, adding that Natsume's just a kid who's wandered into a place of ghosts and befriended them. It's not a terribly untrue statement, even if it's unfair, but in his second year, Wataru wasn't particularly nice with his words: he even drags, in a somewhat showy fashion, Eichi's entire plan (his story, his script) as being poorly-written, as something he can't understand his role in. Is he the villain, or the princess being proposed to? The main character is plainly Eichi, but which one is he supposed to be, so he can play it just as he's supposed to...?
This, ultimately, is a terrible defining trait of Wataru, primarily in that year, in his past, and even a little into his third year: he's not someone who can dance to his own scripts. He can only perform other people's, because he spent his life wanting to give back the happiness and love and excitement he was given as an orphan, adopted by a lovely old couple. Doing that, as he says, makes him happy in return; putting others before him, letting them to take a main character-like role, is something he doesn't mind, because on stage if he's the main role he can't watch the main role. He likes to be other roles, supporting or co-stars, and interact with those in the spotlight instead.
Because as a genius, as someone who learned many things and could do many things and did many things, more fantastic to the last, until he became someone who couldn't be understood, who was lonely as a result adn without friends until he began attending Yumenosaki—he was a main character, and he found himself happier retreating to the stage wings. He isn't the type to step back and watch juniors grow—he's very involved—but all the same, he won't be leading them in a main character role; he'll be pushing them from the sides, as someone who happens to be standing on the same stage as them, even if he's a shameless show-off about it.
In the Five Oddballs, where he found people he could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with and love; and in fine, where he found his home and where he could be himself without remorse.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
♪ Genius Idol - so he can sing, dance (not just idol dances either, a variety of them, even in basics—ballroom, belly, cheerleading, with his specialty being limbo), all of that. He's one of the Five Oddballs as well, so his talent is exceptional... He's the kind of person who can do anything/pick up on anything almost instantly because he's a "genius" and, as he says himself, there's nothing he can't do.
♫ Theater Club - president of it, and he's been acting for a long time, and shifts through characters, roles, and masks on stage without hesitation and without fault; on top of that, he directs and write scripts, does improv and adlibs, his own makeup and likely others', etc.
♪ Wataruisms - moving hair? pulling roses and flowers and birds out of thin air, turning them into other things? tying a cherry stem with his tongue into the shape of the Tokyo Tower? enlarging his ears to a comical size? He Can Grow Limbs? ...these are all magic tricks, smoke-and-mirrors type ones, but how he does them we just don't know. Additionally this is just a small selection he's been shown able to do in canon, he's done fantastic things like this ever since he was a kid to keep surprising people/keep their interest, even though it got him regarded as someone who couldn't be understood by normal people in the end.
♫ Able to easily dislocate his joints (??? why.) and make his limbs longer. Look.
♪ He has excellent hearing even without the ear enlargement thing, and even if he didn't, he can also read lips and understands gestures and pantomime.
♫ Perfect mimicry. He can mimic voices, attitudes, etc. all perfectly, even within a couple of minutes of meeting people.
♪ He's learned ventriloquism from Shu, because why not.
♫ Can play multiple instruments, including the chindonya.
♪ He knows how to hypnotize people and has done so successfully more than once. I'm really sorry about this list.
♫ Able to conceal his presence somehow.
♪ Honestly every time a new story with Wataru comes out he can do some other new, fantastical thing, so let's leave it at that.

AU PERSONALITY:
While still quite hedonistic, he's less concerned with people the way his canon self is; he doesn't put a hearty importance on love either, except in avoiding too serious relations (the only thing he's excessively stern about, actually), largely due to his own being burned when he was younger. He isn't a fan of talking about serious things and goes out of his way to avoid them, change the subject, or just add a layer of levity to the situation if he can!!! He's also in the bad habit of just ... not caring, if he doesn't have a reason to, though he's quick to find reason if he really wants to.
He also doesn't have a rampant desire to put others before himself necessarily, and it isn't as if making others happy makes him happy, because he never had the experience of being an orphan who was finally taken in by a nice old man and woman; he has no love or happiness to try and repay, basically. He loves his parents and his family in general, but he doesn't feel the need to do that, and he's quite content in being a relentless show-off and main character, rather than letting anyone else take the role.

☆ The firstborn son and eldest child of the Hibiki family ♪ His mother is French, his father is Japanese. He has a little sister. Family life was pretty normal; they spoke a mix of the two languages, though it was probably primarily Japanese.
☆ Eventually, their parents divorced due to some work-related issues/business; as such they stayed on amicable terms. His little sister went to live in France with their mother, while Wataru moved to America with his father. They switched off visits for school breaks/summer vacation/etc.
☆ Stuff was all pretty chill through school until he hit his junior year of high school; he fell in love with his French teacher of the time and attempted to pursue a relationship with him. This lasted through graduation, and he even went to France to be with him!! Transferred the college credits he'd gotten from taking prep classes in high school with him when he went to a French university that's a sister school of kinds to RU, all that good stuff.
☆ And shortly found out he was married, which was... not great... thanks.
☆ Heartbroken but undeterred, Wataru stayed in France to continue his education. His majors included history, mathematics, art history... before he settled on drama (education). This is due in part to performing on the streets during a rough spot and finding he actually really liked people cheering for him... Praise is good. ♪ (Praise is also what got him into relationship troubles but, like, not the point here.)
☆ Was broke and homeless a couple of times during this, though he stayed off-and-on with his mother and little sister when it got too much to bear on his own; during one spot of this, he found an ad on the French version of Craigslist (Le Bon Coin) for a private live-in tutor/caregiver that paid suspiciously well, and, being a little desperate, he went for it.
☆ The boy he takes care of is very spoiled and part of a cult— Wataru keeping an eye on him is basically a cover-up. Wataru keeps his mouth shut and does his job just looking after the guy.
☆ After graduating university, they stayed in France for a little while until they were ordered to move (back) to Recollé; he was around 23ish at this point, and he complied because they were paying for their housing so...
☆ Becomes a drama teacher at the elementary school in Recollé; probably subs for other arts too, like music/dance, in that elementary school way it does. Meets Nazuna (pronounces) here.
☆ Begins taking ballet classes as well after moving and, as of the current year, has picked it up enough to become a part-time instructor. He teaches Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights.

Extra, since Tsukasa and Wataru share a canon: I promise you they're in two stories together ("together"), which are Easter Night and Starry Night Festival; Easter Night, Wataru is in chapter 1 and solely talks to Tsumugi about the upcoming Easter Live outside of the school, and in the epilogue, where he talks to Anzu at the actual festival. Tsukasa similarly is in the prologue of Easter Night talking to Anzu about Easter and eating sweets, and in the epilogue... talking to Anzu about sweets.
